UOC Spirit never dies

My first UOC was in 1997. 12 years later i am back. Lol.

Some say i am too old for it. Some say i am boliao to go and do this again. But the S-Spirit is still in me, and if i have the time, i will go. I still remember the time when i am still in school i was very active . even after i graduate , i still make the effort to join the camp. people who did not go through the camp will not understand why the spirit never dies. Till now, the only people i keep in touch after graduate are not my course mates.. but the friends i make during the camp, year after year. That is why i have friends who are much younger than me too!

I have not been attending the camps for the last few years because of my work. But now, I have the choice to choose to be the funloving Tigger or sad sacked Eeyore. Made this video last night. Check this out

Brick Wall

Was reading The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. There was a paragraph there which i like . It is under the Chapter “Never Give up “

Brick Walls are there for a reason. And once you get over them – even if you need someone to practically throw you over, be thankful and it will be helpful to tell others how you did it

That is why we need to  NETWORK!!

AMK Community Hospital Sucks

Granny was discharged from TTSH and transferred to AMK Community Hospital for rehabilitation, however today i got a call from my Aunt and she say they are transferring Granny out. I ask her where , she say she didnt know so i requested her to put me to the nurse. when i ask the nurse “where are you all transferring my grandmother to ?”

The nurse replied “I dont know where she is going to , i ask the doctor to call you later”

Fuck.. what type of nurse is this??

I quickly rush to the hospital only to find out that she has to be transferred back to TTSH because of respiratory problems. The ambulance is coming at 1pm , and no one call the family to informed until my aunt reached at 12.15pm to find out.

So i ask the nurse again “Why isnt there anyone who tell us what is happening ?”

The nurse say “ we wanted to call you already, but your aunt is here so we tell her”

I say ‘ But she dont understand english, and you all speak to her in English”

Fuck.. what type of system is this ? Why do they ask me to be the spokesperson but did not tell me anything about it ?

So i requested to see the doctor in charge. The doctor, I cannot remember the name but i will be going to find out says , “your granny has fever and then has breathing prblems, we cannot do physio on her, so we need to send her back to TTSH for heart specialist to treat her”

i say , “ but she was diagnosed as fit for phsyio before she is discharged from TTSH 1 week ago, what happened between her discharge till now ? is it something new that happened?”

Doctor say “ we dont know”

I say “ how can you say you dont know, she came directly to the hospital to here. Is it something wrong with the operation or what?”

Doctor say “i cannot conclude that”

I say “ Then can i say is due to negligence of this hospital that resulted in her situation now ?

Doctor say “ we cant tell why there is a fever or why she has breathing problems…… We are doing this for the best of the patient”

I say “ Dont treat the patient as a ball and bounce her around… forget it , is there a bed already reserved?”

Doctor say “ No , you need to go to A&E and the hospital will take care of it “

I say “What? i need to go in as a new case?”

Doctor say “ Yes, this is the process”

Fuck.. what type of doctor is this??

I went to look for the social worker in charge of her case to lodge a complain, there is already previous incidents that the miscommunication between the nurses has caused a lot of inconveiencen to the patient and the family. There was a case of missed medicine for the patient! and there are cases where different nurses tell me different things about the patient ( one says she ate breakfast, one say she didnt ) So i cannot rule out the possibility that my grandmother condition could be a result of neglience on the hospital side

When i finally found the social worker ( nurse say she went for lunch and she has no MOBILE PHONE ) the social worker looks totally confused what is happening. I highlighted the incidents and my dissatisfaction , they just nod their head but cannot make any decisions at all. Waste my time. At least, they escalted the issue up to the Public Communications departement i believe ( i rcv a call from them but i was busy at Tan Tock Seng doing the admission so i didnt manage to vent my frustrations on them one more time )

21km or 42km?

Singapore Marathon 2009 ( Some call it Std Chart Run ) is back. I got the mailer that is offering runners who particpated last year a 30% discount for Early Bird registration fees.

But the question now is 21 or 42 ?

What happened on July 13th ?

8am – Starbucks Centre point Orchard . I love the starbucks there simply because the environment is conducive for me to do some work on my own without any interference. A cup of Mocha without Whipped Cream is all i need to keep myself occupied the whole morning.

11am – Dim Sum Lunch at Ah Yat. got 50% off on weekdays. Check out the Lobster!

Ah-Yat

2pm – Went to NTU to check out the freshies selection for this year UOC. The last time i was really active in the camp was probably 2000 or 2001. After that, my career took over the priority. This year i will try to spend more time in the camp since there will be nothing much at work

4pm Badminton at YCK Sports Hall. This was a last minute decision. I like Last minute Decisions :)

7pm Dinner at Hougang Mall. Ate Duck Noodles.

9pm Chill out at O+. 1 pint + 2 Bottles .

11pm Mahjong thru the night….. win $120

在摩托罗拉剩余的日子 : 111 Days

Very soon, we will enter the last 100 days of our "transition phase". I volunteered and started engaging our 2 vendors who provides Career Transition services to come down to our office to give our employees a talk and overview on what the workshop will be about and how it can help us. Everyone will definately signed up since this is covered by Motorola. I see no reason why we should not.

On the other hand, Nz requested some of our managers to form up a S.W.A.T. team to "help" some of our colleagues to get a job. There were things like organising our own job fair, arranging career talks, networking with other company HR managers to see if there are positions available. Apparently, he feels that everyone is sitting there wasting their time and should be doing something more meangingful instead of playing kaixin.net, facebook or just surfing their day away.

Well at least to my knowledge, many of us are already venturing into entreprenurship. I know of at least 4 groups who are diong such. Nevertheless, I will continue to work on this SWAT thing even though i am already very busy with other stuff. Well, thats probably one of the last things i can do for the department , if it is really useful.

HTC Magic

Saw the advertisement on the Saturday Straits Time. This wasnt in my budget planning. I am supposed to get a good printer ( probably Canon MP988 ) and maybe Canon D500 SLR camera.
Went down to paragon to take a look at this 2nd android phone that is released by HTC in the market and boy i fell in love with it immediately.

1. The physical size, especially its thickness is now greatly reduced with the removal of the hardware qwerty keyboard.

2. It comes preload with CupCake ( Android Firmware 1.5 ) which should be pushed to the HTC Dream version sooner or later. Tons of features and upgrades on Cupcake compared to the current version. ( whats the current version codename call ? )

3. Although i will miss the hardware keyboard which allows me to type relatively faster, but when i tried out the HTC Dream soft keyboard, it is quite responsive and it has a numeric keypad SMS input ( The conventional handphone sms way ) which i always liked. The reason is because i can actually send sms without looking at the phone ( it should have tactile feedback on keypress ) . So i guess this is give and take.

4. The battery life performance reported is significantly better. It should be able to last more than a day according to reviews that i have read.

5. I can trade in my HTC Dream for $400!! That makes this dude about $198 with a 2 yr contract.

I must get it! I probably get a cheaper printer and put camera plans on hold for this month :P

在摩托罗拉剩余的日子 : 116 Days

Havent Blog about my remaining days in Motorola for the past week . Main reason is really there is nothing much changes. The usual stuff of entering office, read a few unread mails which are not really life and death critical situation, and then start working on some of my own stuff. Thats what happen to most of the team in the office. Some came late, some came in to mend their farm in kaixin.net, some managed their restaurant in Restaurant City, some try to break their high score or personal best in Bejeweled Blitz.

There are others who started studying for their PMP exams. A few of my colleagues already taken and already passed and can be call "Certified Project Managers"

As for myself, I have submitted my credentials to PMI, was expecting them to send me a confirmation by this week but did not get a response. Probably next week, SC commented i could be the lucky one that gets audited. Well , if they want to audit me, I am okay, since i have that 4500 hours that the requested. I am already in the industry for 8 years !!

Other than the PMI, I started contacting the Recruitment OUtplacement service for the department. The services are paid by Motorola and is supposed to provide the employees who are going to exit in September a better understanding about themselves and how they can discover the next step in their career.

Of course and not forgetting Multiclickz. I just need to put more time on it. Workload is getting higher.

A walk @ LCK Cemetry

I cannot last remember when i went back to participate in UOC activities, but it must have been at least 4-5 years back. This year, i decided to go back and help out a bit since i do not have the burden of night conference calls which i used to have the last few years, i am keeping in touch regularly again with my juniors, and i got friends who are joining this year orientation camp.

S Group has a recce in LCK cemetry for the traditional "Sgroup pre-camp initiation". Woh, when i was a freshie, we did it in tutorial rooms. And it scared the hell out of me. haha. When i first turned a senior, we continue to do it in tutorial rooms, and we scared the hell out of others. I cannot remember which year onwards our SGroup descendants daringly go to the cemetry. Arranging their own transport and their own manpower, it sure isnt easy.

I aint going to pour cold water over their ideas, eventually is still THEIR camp now. But this is the first time i go into a cemetry.. and i alerady feel my hair all standing up le....

Too Many or Too Few ?

Raiding Thoughts

Problems appear everywhere. Deciding on who can raid and who cant raid is a decision most people doesnt want to make especially if you are just "playing a game" and there are no tangilble benefits involved. However that activity still needs to be done. Maintaining a healthy bench is necessary for both raiders and Guild masters because you count on the bench players when your starting 25 has to leave early due to personal issues. How then do we strike a balance among both of them ?

I never love to be on the bench. even during school days or during work, whenever there is a new project or a competitive game, i hope my boss or my coach pick me to start. However, as i grow older, i begin to understand what is teamwork. Though i still know the feeling of been asked to sit on the bench. But when i look at how soccer players play, and those 5 who always sit on the bench waiting for their chance to be called out by the manager to have a chance to show what they can do on the field, even if it is just 5 minutes of play for them, even if they know they are just slotted in so that someone else can rest or they already have a clear win of the game, they still go ahead, i begin to understand what is team work. Even if you do not have a chance to play , and your club wins, you still will be appreciated for the effort in the trainings. Back to WoW, i dont think we will end up in such situation though because there will always be rotations, but what is the best rotation?

We also need to know the facts that our guild doesnt have all grown ups who have experience life to its fullest. Some may not understand and drama will erupt, So it is our responsiblity to let them know

1. Sitting on the bench does not mean you are no good.
2. Sitting on the bench does not mean you are inferior
3. Sitting on the bench simply means the present raid, in terms of class balance, space , attendance sign up, you may have to be on standby.

Thoughts #1
-> Do we have enough raiders ?
I will think general yes. Might be missing on a few specific classes ( Elemental Shaman , Rogues? ) This one i will probably start another thread to discuss with the more experienced raiding officers.

What happens if we have too many raiders ? There are a couple of solutions
1. Enforce raid signups, flasking etc. The dedicated one will continue to persist , those out for fun will just go off after some time
2. Arrange 1 x25 and 1 x10 if we have more than 40 turns up per nite. I dont think we will see this now unless the guild call for an expansion in recruitment. -> This is the GM's Call.

Thoughts #2
Have attendance policy. -> This proposal already put up in one of the threads
The below can be considered after the first phase is in place
-> Think of action for 3 times no show in a month ( signed up but no show )
-> think of actionable items for all other sceneriors

Attendance figures will come in handy when we need to bench someone and cant decide.
Attendance figures can also be use when there is a tied in loot. The one who attend more should get it first.

Thoughts #3
Be transparent. Everything we do in life, we have to be transparent. There is a saying by Antoine de Saint-Exupery - ""If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." It means " Clarify your vision, and motivation will come "

Personal opinion, i will go for More instead of less. Keep the raiders happy by clearly stating the policies and enforced them and .. Be Transparent.

Raiders will understand that this willhappen to them, every good guild have to do it.

2 more additions to my Kitchen

Woh, Mrs Chan allows me to buy the 2 items below. I have a fully equipped Kitchen now!

Drive Thrus

I love Drive Thrus, not only Mac Drive Thrus but every drive thrus that you can find. In Singapore , i think only Macdonald has it. But when i was in the US for business or holidays, i always make use of them. Every Fast Food restaurant you can find there has one ( unless they are within the malls ) , Starbucks has it too , and even pharmacies.

I love it because i do not have to park the car to get what i want. I love it because you do not have to stand up to queue and think what you should do while waiting. I love it simply it is convienient.

Lets have more drive thrus in Singapore. * the nearest one to me now is the Mac at the Sengkang Sports Complex, if there is one starbucks there , i will surely go and buy a grande Mocha with no whip every morning! *

Never Close your doors and shut your windows before the SUn Sets.

A follow up to the opportunities that was presented to me 2 days ago.

The talent sourcing guy call KS called me again for referral and i decided to ask him for the job description so that i can forward to my friends or colleagues who might be interested. Upon receiving the email, i find that the JD fits what i wanted and decided to give it a shot myself. If i managed to get into the position , i got to ask my boss for an early release . Anyway that will matter only if i am offered a position. This morning i got another call from KS asking me about more details if i am technically competent , and if i am a high performer in the organisation and many other questions. Well my doors are still open to them at the moment

The IOS ( Internal Opportunity System ) is still available, the new boss , also happen to be called KS . I was curious who he is and decided to pop by and see if i know him "by face". For me, there are a couple of things i need to consider before i took up a new job . $$$is definitely one of them. Who you are going to work for and the people you are going to work with matters a lot too.
Although technically you cannot control if you are going to a new environment. But if i am doing a IOS , i will like to find out first. After considering all these i decided i will not be taking this position for now.

The main reason is as follows

Andy " I like to know more about the position available and its job description.
Do I do that before or after the IOS ? "

KS "you can get the brief JD from the IOS or we can meet to have a quick chat. The only problem is my boss is in this week and I am quite full in my agenda. Let see…"

He doesnt even want to talk to me! Makes me feel like i am desperate for the job. I will not forgo my severance for this. Nor will i close my doors and shut my windows before the sun sets.

I have my first meeting with my 2 new partners on our business plan. A lot of brainstorm ideas and overall , it looks exciting. Internet advertising is really a boundary-less investment and you can do tons of stuff with it. I setup google docs to stored our meeting invites and i am impressed with what google docs can do. I dont really have high expectations of this business partnership, but what i really want to achieve through this is to take something away in this 4 months from this experience. I am sure i will be able to do that.

Opportunities start knocking

1. Got an internal opportunity to take up the position of a Project Manager in the other sector. However i am still having reservations if i should seize that opprotunity due to a couple of reasons.

a. accepting the offer will means my severance package is gone. Though some told me is better to get a secure job than to get the $$$. No one can guarantee anything especially within Motoorla based on the current situation.

b. I am not sure if i want to seal up my own opportunites so early. Taking this offer now will laterally means i am not going to look for smoething else outside ( i can still do it , but no point since i wont have the package anymore if i quit )

c. I am reading up on Business Plans. You never know if your business ideas will end up giving you houses, bmws and 6 figure revenue.

2. Head hunting company called me for a position as a software manager in a MNC company. I told them i am only available in October. Didnt really tell them it was a retrenchment. THey thought i am under contract. Didnt have any more details on it, so i just sent them my CV

3. I am still in thoughts about doing my own internet business. reading up a lot and doing a lot of research. Wasnt really putting my chips that it will make it. But , all great ideas always come from crazy ideas first. I have talks with a couple of colleagues and hopefully we can form a partnership to dive deeper into this area.

Whether it is (1), (2) or (3) , it looks interesting. I still havent feel the "pain" of retrenchment though i am only left with 136 days. In fact i quite like my life now since i haev a lot of time to explore the various paths that i can take after Sep30.

Cheers

We were at 23% at our peak.
.
Over the weekend , Lalla announced his resignation. For those who do not know who is Lalla, he is the corporate VP for Mass Market segment. In summary, he is my boss 's boss. the one who call the shots for this market segment.
There is a little commotion when he left, i expected that. He moved to Dell, i also expected that. We have a discussion in office about his resignation impact to our fate. Basically there wont be much changes. In fact , I think i am glad we already know what will happen to us , there is just too many changes happening in the organisation. With 6% market share only, lets see what miracles will happen to turn around this household brand.

在摩托罗拉剩余的日子 : 147 days

Time passes real fast, our time left with Moto is about 5 months. The amount of workload / projects in the office is getting lesser and lesser. At the same time , we have a few more cases of colleagues finding jobs and requesting for early release.

Through K.T, i get to know that C.B. is also looking around for business opportunities. I spend an hour talking with him today. As he mentioned , the higher you are in the rank , the higher you are paid and the harder you will find to get a job outside especially in the current global situation. C.B. is looking at partnership and see if there is an opportunity to do something we can really call our own. I am quite interested in his vision and decided that well maybe i should not get myself tied to a job now first. Moreover Mrs Chan indicated a very strong interest to take a break in europe and states. In Fact she already done the planning and completed it for 12 days europe trip. Yippee!

Starting a Business isnt tough, running a business is the challenging one. If i dont try, i will never know if i will like it or not. Even though it fails, it probably will be a valuable lesson in life and i believe i will definately learn something out from that experience. I wouldnt consider myself a late starter. In chinese they call it 迟来的春天 . having been working for the past 9 years, i have gained enough experience to venture on my own and not too late to afford any major failures i hope. Giving myself 12 to 18 months of time span, even if it doesnt work out, i can still go out to look for a job , dont forget i will very soon be PMP and ITIL certified. Haha.

Maybe i should really start thinking about this seroiusly. A couple of actions i should start doing
1. Get the proposal template from C.B. and start working and identifying on "opportunities"
2. Get some good books on business proposals and startup.

I hope this isnt another "三分钟的热度".

Social Responsibilty @ the library

All the people going to the libarary need to hv their details scanned in case they need to be contavcted if swine flu is detected. Seems like this is getting nearer and nearer to us. There is a site that gives up to dates on the areas that are infected. You can find it here . http://www.swineflu.sg/

They even have a map that shows which area is already affected. This is the current outlook

What will you do if you have to be self quarantined for a week at home as part of being socially responsible ? Well if it is me, quaranting at home isnt really a bad thing since

1. I can work from home to get my work done.

2. I can finished up all my tvb series which i have been lacking behind the past few weeks due to Mrs Chan late working schedule ( i usually wait for her to watch the shows unless i cannot resist the temptation )

3. Play my Healmemoto . There are a lot of achievement titles i wanted to get but i didnt have time to do it

4. Finished my books. I am reading the Last Lecture. I still have 2 books in my shelves i havent find time to read ( Both by Sophie Kinsella )

5. Study for my PMP exam. The exam probably going to be in July. Time to get back into the study mood.

6. Work on my business plan. I havent start penning down those thoughts, but self quarantine means i can work on it

Staying at home probably means i need to cook myself or keep callling Macdonald for my meals. Also that will mean i got to think of other ways to continue my AHM training. Maybe round around the house. Haha.

What does Android 1.5 have to offer?

I am still waiting for Singtel to push this to us. I hope this will come in Either this month or early June. Some of the features that we can be expecting in 1.5 and how i feel it will impact me , which directly measures how desperate i am waiting for 1.5

- Availabitly of onscreen keyboard - This doesnt really ring a bell for me since i still prefer the slide out keypad. Makes my typing easier. I tried the on screen keyboard on ipod Touch. No doubt it is better than the onscreen on my android ( the chompSMS has a onscreen keyboard that looks exactly like the ipod version ) , i cant really "feel" the typing.

- Support of Stereo Bluetooth - This probably also wont affect me much cos i do not listen to music on my mobile phone. I use either my ipod nano or ipod touch for music and i only listen to music when i run or when i travel.

- Video Recording! -> this will be moderate useful for me. I dont do a lot of video recording , but if there is one available and i need it , it will come in handy. And it allows direct upload to youtube which is a cool feature especially when you want to share it immedately after you have recorded it.

- Faster and smoother Browser -> High impact for my personal use. The browser probably is the most frequent application i use on my HTC Dream. I used it mainly for my google reader.

- Marginally better battery life -> Super High Impact. The battery life now sucks. Not sure if marginally better battery life = how many more hours. I already ordered a additional 2600mA battery from HK Ebay and it should be on the way and reaching me anytime this week. Cant wait for it.

Faster camera startup and image capturing -> Should be useful. Anything fast is good.

Home screen widgets And Live folders -> probably gimmicks and depends on what apps are written for it.

Copy & Paster within the browser -> Never really notice that 1.1 doesnt have this. I guessed i havent found the use for it yet. Haha.

Specific Date & Time stamp in call log - ANOTHER Thank God improvement

The calm sea before the storm ? Motorola is expected to do the Q1 earning reports this week or early next week. We know the handset business is not going anywhere , and the company has decided to shift the focus to "smartphones" and prioritised America, China and Latin America market. The share price has been climbing steadily in the last 4-6 weeks. Does that indicate recovery sign ? or is just 回光返照 ?

The invasion of Swine Flu

Five things we need to know about Swine Flu

1. It is worst than Sars.
2. It is believed to be originated from Mexico
3. One in three victimes does not show any symptoms.
4. The flu is most contagiuos 24 hours before any signs surface
5. The virus is discharged through saliva, nasal secretions and faeces.

Time for everyone to be socially responsible..

My Letter to New Horizon

Hi KE,

With regards to our phone conversation earlier this morning, thank you for arranging the change of classroom for today. Room 10 is much much better in terms of environment and furniture compared to Room 11. please continue to arrange Room 10 for our lessons for the remaining 3 weeks.

There are a few incidents which I hope you can work with your team next week because it has given us some very bad impressions on New Horizons

A. Jack Ooi
Being the sales consultant, i would expect Jack to faciliate us even after we "signed" the deal. it has been very disappointing. Jack fits the image of a "insurance agent" who just want to clinch the deal and forget about everything after that. On April 18th, i requested your front desk to contact Jack ( i was told he is out of Town ) anytime during the week to help us make arrangement for a change of class room. To date, i have not heard a single response from him. Jack is forever missing, maybe he is SO BUSY with his clients that I am not too sure. Considering we have signed education courses with New Horizons for about 30 students on an average of 2 courses each , I would expect at least some post-sales follow up. It could be your operations manager. Whichever the case, we are left stranded on our own figuring out what we should do when we are stuck with problems on the facilities.

B. Classroom facilities
Room 11 is not siutable to be a classroom for textbook teaching based on the following reasons
1. The table space is occupied by the CRT monitor and the keyboard and leaves very little space for the file and textbook that we are supposed to use for the lessons

2. The hydraulic chairs are creaking whenever you moved or lean back. This causes everyone to be focusing more on their sitting position rather than the class because the creaking noise is really very distracting to others. Some of the chairs seems like they have been around since 1980 if you look at the condition and the stains on it.

3. Because of the CRT monitors, students sitting at the back of the class has portion of their views blocked. The best way is to stick their neck up high or peak in between 2 CRT monitors.

C. Course Materials
We just got to know the course materials have a few chapters missing. Is this part of Sales Consultant Job Scope or Operations Consultant? Jeffrey Loo promised to fill in the missing parts to us by email today. I have yet to checked.

D. Receptionist on Duty April 25th.
When i got to find out that the classroom this morning is going to be Room 11, i was a little bit annoyed and requested your front desk for assistance. I find a few reasons she give me a little too hard to believe. This is what she has mentioned

1. I was not here last week , i am not sure who follow up with you. ( Am i supposed to remember everyone in the education organisation ? )

2. We dont have name cards of our sales consultants. ( I requested for Jack and Tracy name card, i was told there isnt any name cards on the front desk. I find it surprising. How do you handle walk in sales in that case? )

3. I couldnt get Tracy on the phone . ( But 30 seconds after she tried , i asked for the number and i got her the first time immediately )

All in all, it is a very bad experience. We are seriously considering if we should proceed with ITIL with new horizons or engage another Education provider. Jeffrey Loo is a terrific instructor , if the facilities and your service staff can treat us like REAL customers , I think the overall experience with New Horizon will be an enjoyable one for everyone. We are really expecting better facilitation considering New Horizons is a Nasdaq listed company, has 300 locations in 60 countries and is a world leader in computer training.

This email is sent by me but at least 15 out of the 19 people have the same thoughts.
I await for your response .

Regards,
Andy Chan
A dissatisfied PMP Student

Back to Skool Part 2/5

Today is the 2nd lesson of a 5 part series to Project Management Professionals. I decided to drive to work today and pay that $11 car park fees because the reading materials are too heavy and bulky. haha I am so spoilt.

A lot of team activities and classroom work today. Learnt how to do a Project Charter, Work Breakdown Structure and Stakeholder analysis diagram. I cant wait to finish the classes and get my certification. Feels good to be studying again!

Check my l ater posts on the unhappiness with the services rendered by the EducationProvider. I am supposed to draft a email to the Sales Director which i will be doing right after posting this.

QB meet me after my class as she is rushing her Q1 report in the office. Since we are so near to the south, we decided to go to Keppel Bay @ Marina for dinner and some chill out. We didnt realise there is a Boat Asia 2009 there this weekend. It is super crowded but i still manage to drive in and get a lot in the Yacht Club. One of those yachts costs at least 300-400k SGD. OMFG! Will i ever own one of these?

在摩托罗拉剩余的日子 : 159 days

There are a lot of firsts today.

- This is the first time i watch show with some of my colleagues/lunch mates even though we have been working together for at least more than 4 years.

- This is the first time i watch show during official office hours.

- This is the first time i purchase 23 movie tickets at one go.

Kat Tan , the dept secretary decided that we should do something on a monthly basis to keep everyone together since we are the remaining bunch of "piglets" waiting to be slaughtered. The first even that happened in the month of April is Movies on Fridays. We selected the show "The International" since it just starting showing on screen on THursday and everyone have not seen it. Verdict 1* , dont watch it.

We are already discussing what else we want to do for the remaining fridays already.

Organising 10 man and 25man Raids

25man has 2.5 times more people than 10 man and is definately more difficult to organise and getting everyone ready. One thing i do notice is when we have 10 man invitations , the invitation out on the calendar is sent and accepted by the parties > the 10 people are aware and conscious they need to be where and at what time.

Comparatively to our 25man, it is more like a , set the event, and see who turns up rather than confirming the attendance for the 25man prior to the event. One suggestion that might work would be to pre confirmed the 25 ( or 20 ) people so that they DO turn up at 10pm. In the event if some of them cannot turn up at 10pm, the raid leader should suggest or decide if they wanna start at 11pm so that the rest do not have to waste their time. Using the calendar is the easiest way, but it is not the most effective way for 25man raids. Putting down either in forum or any other forms of communication “hey you are in for this Sunday 25man, please be there at 10pm “ makes people know they have a responsibility and 24 people are waiting for them.

That is how my ex guild does it. And amazingly it works fine. What we are lacking is proper planning in getting the people in.

First taste of ulduar

Entering the 2nd week into ulduar. For 25 man achievements, we only managed to down FL. For 10 man runs, we are slightly better, moving all the way to Ignis. However , i think the best part is still the 25man. We have problems getting the critical mass into the raid on raid nights, many nights is usually wait and wait and then end up doing something else ( naxx25 or 10man )

Yesterday Nz drop me a email and tell me " we need to talk". Was thinking what it could exactly be? Could it be work related or department related?

In the end , it was neither. He was concern about my recent indulgement in running and gaming and thought it could be a "delayed post-retrenchment obsessive behavious" ( DPOB ) . I told him wasnt , but was touched that he showed that concern to me.

Anyway we have a 20 mins talk about myself . Hopefully, our boss-employee relationship will continue somewhere else after Sep30.

Back to Skool Part 1 / 5

Somewhere in my earlier posts i probably mentioned i took up 2 courses as part of government CITREP funding and also skills upgrading. One of them is PMP certification ( Project Management Professionals ). I took the saturday classes which mean 5 x saturdays i have to wake up usual time and make my way to New Horizons ( tiong bahru ) for the classes. Today is back to Skool Part 1/5. ( i wrote the blog real time using my HTC Dream , so the language and content reflects how easily and my mood at that point in time )

7.52am - boarded mrt. Wah lao, saturday morning oso no place to sit. I decided to take train not because I want to avoid erp or parking charges. But sometimes doing something out of your normal routine just let u see things in a different perspective. Watching people on the train is a new experience everyday! I always wonder who they r, why they r in the train at this time and

7.56am - ey wait. I found a seat! Mai Tu Liao.

8.02am - reading my book in the journey. Saw this from Eleanor Roosevelt " Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart " hmm.. I start to form up 3 names each from my different phase of life that I can immediately think of and did they leave any footprints behind ? *ask me how to see it if u want to see it*

8.48 - I reached early. Tb plaza is so crowded w students this morning. Couuldnt find a place for bfast ended up eating nasi lemak from old chang kee n soya milk along the pavement seats. My class has 19ppl. Classrooms small chairs creaked. I started to hv a bad feeling abt this place already.

11.43am - took my pre course assessment. 65 qns in 30mins. I scored 13 correct. Can't finished. I sucks. Instructor say we will redo this after the course. Real life projects also same. So many tasks so little time . How true. Haha

Pics of the Classroom

- The chairs creaked and have stains!

We supposed to have table space for a book and a file. Apparently we dont have. And who is still using CRT monitors! And how are we supposed to see the screen in front ( where i am taking the pic from ) with all the big rocks blocking!!

so that means today talk less , interact less.

我在摩托罗拉剩余的日子 : 169 days

Tuesdays are staff meeting days. Usually there will be some news from boss. Sometimes is good news, sometimes is bad. Today, we got to know that one of my boss direct report have found a IOS to another sector within the organisation. That is good news for him

Then i start to think for myself. 他终于靠岸了, 几时到我 。 i havent been really thinking what i should do when i receive my notification that i will be retrenched in Sep30 on Jan15th. Because, the usual reasons "still early", "now find job also no use", "just relax first". even till now, i am still enjoying my life , doing things which i have always wanted to do but never have the chance to find time to do. I am a dedicated WoW Raider now, i read up more than i have ever for the past 8 years, i go back to my AMK house more often, exercise more and spend more time with my loved ones and friends.

But that announcement suddenly ticked me and for a second i was thinking, hmm is IOS the way to go. Should i forgo the $$$ and stay on in my comfort zone or should i end this chapter , take the $$$ and try something else. You never know if the pasture on the other side of the field is greener until you go over. But what if , you gover already and find that the pasture is not green , there is no turning back .

Is a decision i got to make, should i make now or should i make later. Things evolve and change every minute. what is green now make whither tomorrow.

I still have 169 days. Actually probably more than that since i am going on a holiday from Oct 1 to Oct 12. That will make it 169 + 12 days :)

DBS CEO Richard Stanley dies from leukaemia infection

I only came to realise DBS CEO has already left this planet when i was reading facebook and one of my friends status msg read "Hope Richard Stanley rest in peace"

He is only 48 years old , and i think he earns millions of dollars every year. Unfortunately, he doesnt have the opportunity to enjoy or reap the rewards. Well at least in my opinion, if he is CEO of one of the best banks around the region, he probably is going to be very very very very busy. and that makes me think about another question :: Is making money more important or enjoying one's life on this planet more important. Probably a chicken and egg issue to some of us ( No money how to enjoy life? )

This incident also brought back memories back to when i was in Sec 2 when one of our schoolmates, classmate in fact have had the same illness. And he didnt survive past O Levels. I think he took the O levels, but he didnt saw his results. First time in my life that a friend passed away. I hope he has find his happiness wherever he is now.

*God Bless*

我在摩托罗拉剩余的日子 : 170 days

Damn , Mot share now is $4.90. I sold it for $4.53. Could have earn 0.37 cents ( USD ) more per share. Assuming i have one lot, thats about 370 USD which is equivalent to $555 SGD or 37 pints of hoegaarden at O+, or 2 nights stay at Fairmount Hotel inclusive of breakfast!

This morning we received official announcement TWIN is cancelled. Cancelled after about 3 months of effort. I do not know how to convert that into $$$ lost. The labour, materials , the business trips. Been in this company for 8+ years, i still cant figuire out how the senior leaders who are sitting comfortably in their office do their "Front End planning".Why start on a project which they know they cant sell to the market? and why they know they dont have a guaranteed volume to reap profits, start on a project and waste everyone time.

Anyway... good luck to those who are still going to stick around to all these *#*&

A Picture A month

I suddenly have this wild idea to create a totally different category in my blog space. I want to capture down my evolving life in pictorial form. Decided to do it on the 1st of every month and post a representative event of that month that happens. Maybe a few years later, when i look back at it, feelings will flow. So to start with , i decided to back track and start from Dec 2008.

Dec 2008
Kelvin's Wedding. Has been some time since one of my closer friends get married. None of them wanna get married. lol. all want to be bachelor's and enjoy life and freedom.

Jan 2009

SDC Black Day. Jan 15th is the day we all know we are going to be retrenched sometime this year. We wear black, and even Business Times reported it! Above my team in Singapore. We are retrenched, but our spirit remains!

Feb 2009
Last ICT. Entered Mindef Reserves. No more SAF!

March 2009

Transitioning activities to Taipei Design Centre. We went to Taipei, did a teambuilding since there is a merger with another group in Taipei. Probably the last trip i go there on company expense

Getting serious about running

The time i really got serious about running was probably last year during AHM 2008 where i joined the 6km Fun Run. After that, i signed up for SCSM 2008 half marathon and started my workout training.

I have a goal for 2009 iin terms of running. I wanted to do a 42km. I desperately wanted to do a 42km marathon. I love running organised runs, especially by big organisations. ( nike, stand chart , SAF probably ) . Mrs Chan used to question me why pay $$$ to go run when you can just do it on your own time. I guessed the atmosphere and the mentality is different when u go for the run with 10,000 or 20,000 other people. Everyone wakes up early in the morning , head to the same starting line , and go for the same finishing line. Moreover, you do not really have much chance to run through the island city landscape. This is not only a run, is already beginning to be a lifestyle that i like to live in.

So now i got serious about running , and i happened to know a WoW mate who runs for a living. We first met up on the eve of Good Friday and i start to get to know more about how to impreove performance and reduce the timing goal i set for myself on Aug 16 ( AHM ) . I want to run below 2 hours ( my last 21km in Dec2008, i clocked 2hr 10 min ) . JF say no problem, and the topic centred around HRM. Heart Rate Monitor.

So over the weekend, i googled, forumed , discussed, facebooked this three words. H-R-M . I decided that i should invest on a reliable, affordable HRM device to facilitate my running dream and running goal. I narrowed down to 2 devices which i am still thinking which to get. Found this on the net comparing the 2 device..

Garmin ForeRunner 50 ( USD $50 )

The Garmin Forerunner 50 is the ideal heart rate monitor for ANY level of exerciser from amateur jogger / cyclist to very serious triathlete. What the Garmin Forerunner 50 will give you is heart rate, running speed, distance and pace (with optional foot pod) and bike speed, distance and pedal cadence (with opional GSC10 bike speed/cadence sensor). With the Garmin Forerunner 50 you also have the ability to download the training sessions to the PC using the Garmin Training Centre software and USB PC data stick (all included free of charge) - FANTASTIC VALUE for MONEY.

Garmin Forerunner 305 ( USD 160 )

The Garmin Forerunner 305 will do everything that the Garmin Forerunner 50 will do, plus the ability to download a TRACK of where you exercised (based on the GPS co-ordinates stored while exercising). Unlike the Foreruner 50, which uses FOOT POD (accelerometer) and BIKE POD (wheel revolutions) to calculate speed, distance and pace, the Garmin Forerunner 305 uses GPS. You may, if you wish, add the FOOT POD, or the GSC10 BIKE SPEED/CADENCE sensor to provide INDOOR running speed (on a treadmill) or bike speed / pedal cadence while (on a turbo trainer). The Garmin 305 also has a far more flexible method of presetting interval sessions (pretty well unlimited transitions), plus the ability to RACE YOURSELF using the VIRTUAL PARTNER option (you tell it you want to run 10K in 42 mins.. it paces you around)

No Raids this week

Entering the 3rd day of the week since server restart, our guild havent run a 25man raid yet. There always isnt enough people and some guildies are disappointed. A lot of questions was in everyone's thoughts : Do we have enough raiders ? Do we still need to hire? Is it due to the fact that Uldar is coming and everyone is just waiting for it ? What about hardcore raiders who just want something to keep themselve occupied? Will people leave as a result of No Raids ?

I can keep going but there will be no answers. I think this week was probably the week where everything happen together

1 x overseas travel
3 x ISP service provider sucks
3 x went to Mambo
1 x Need to prioritise real life work
1 x School Term coming to an end and need to finish work
1 x missing for quite some time , also quoting school work
1 x pregnant girlfren cannot commit
1 x suddenly sick of the game ( or raid i not sure ) and not turnning up anymore

Everyone has priorities and not every priority will be the same. Some put gaming as something they can't live without. Most can live without it. Personally i do not put gaming with online friends as something that supercedes everything else in my life. However gaming WITH real life friends makes the difference.

This reminds me of my real life work as a middle manager where I have to constantly face with turnovers and resignations and "i need to take 3 weeks leave" requests. Projects dont wait for people. I guess no one will really have the authority to say , No you cant do this. Yes you must make sure you do this for me. Probably doable if you are in the army but not in civilian life or in game life. I remember i saw this before by someone "I paid for the monthly game subscription, i like to play the game the way i play it ". For me , it will be "Since i paid for the monthly game subscription, i like to enjoy the game. It doesnt matter how i play it"

In real life, i wont end up emotional when things like the above happen. I probably did the very first time because i am inexperienced. But over the years, i learn how to handle such things better and able to see things in a different perspective. "Every door closed will open another door" In WoW, i let the guild leaders decide what is the best approach to handle such situation. I tried listing down 10 things i can do in WoW if there are no raids on Raid Days

1. Do Dailies
2. Do farming
3. Clear all my outstanding quests and get achievement
4. Chat with Guildies . I love to chat!
5. Play alternates
6. Play Trivia!
7. Just dont do anything and watch people running around
8. Check achievement page and see what else i can clear
9.
10.

Then , i try listing down 10 things i can do if there is NO WOW

1. More time on exercising
2. More time to pen down thoughts on what i will do after Sep30
3. More time on my Ps3 and Wii
4. More Time on Facebook!
5. More time reading and net surfing
6. More time to watch tvb drama
7. More time to learn something in RL like COOKING.
8.
9.
10.

I didnt put "More time with Mrs Chan" because Mrs Chan doesnt have much time for me also. :)

I didnt put "More time with RL frens " either because I manage to stay connected and in touch with my RL frens regularly as well.

Then i start to think about "What i will missed most if there is no WoW"
< i will filled this up later , now is 8.37am , need to go brush teeth first >

Wedding Anniversary 2009

5 years ago this day was a turning point in my life....

<>

Updated April 11 , 2345 hrs
Out for about 38 hours before i came back to complete this posting
Assuming April 11, 2345hrs is NOW, Lets do a recap what happened today

NOW - 1 hour - ARrived back at carpark , and on the way home. What a long day
NOW - 3 hours - went to chinatown for supper. Eat the Great Wall porridge. Wasnt as fantastic as before anymore. BF and Frens went to sing KTV, Mr and Mrs Chan tired, go home rest.
NOW - 4 hours - All of us cannot decide where to go, in the end we end up at Telok Blangah Hill Park. Is like the Macritchie Tree Top walk. I didnt want to go at first, because i think going there as a group doesnt really serve any purpose. That place really is for people to go piak piak in my opinion. haha. Or maybe for couples or to-be couples
NOW - 6 hours - Stayed at TCC for about 5 hours. Yes , in that 5 hours, i surf net, play nds, read my book, eat langsane, drink earl grey, talk cock . Mrs Chan once said 'all u need is a laptop and you dont have to go out . I do agree with her to an extent. Maybe i am also "Otaku", or Otaku that likes to go TCC

Now - 12 hours - Check out from Fairmount. I love the hotel, i will definately go back again

Now - 16 hours - breakfast @ Pregos. one word - Shiok.

Now - 24 hours - Midnite movie - Confessions of a Shopaholic. I have that book. But i havent read it. I think i got the book for 2 years already. I quite like the show , though it doesnt qualify for any "oscar". At least i feel entertained , and is only $6. ( New Cinema FilmGarde promotion ) .
What do i get out of the movie ? hmm...

1. I like the term "The woman with the green scarf '
2. I can relate to her and her shopping habits because i am also a shopaholic. I never missed out anything i like and can afford.
3. I dont like her telling lies to cover other lies. haha. I hope i dont do that :)

Now - 28 hours - Dinner at Glutton Place. Check the spread. I prefer this to eating at restaurant because is more comfotable to eat in the room and you can multitask :)

Now - 35 hours - Lunch and forgot to bring charger adpator. Sucks again. Went back to take. Then head to Fairmount to check in.

Now - 38 hours - left home , headed to AMK library found out the library doesnt open on Public holidays. Sucks.
